The power of family: how one family’s session led to a proposal, engagement session, all at Donner Lake in Truckee, California.
A few years ago I had the pleasure of photographing Jen and Gary at The Ritz-Carlton in Truckee, California. We followed with a pregnancy photo session. The other day I received a text from Jen asking me if I was available for a family session at Northstar. I was more than happy to do it since I haven’t seen them in a while. We decided to do it at Donner Lake on a pier with the magnificent Sierras as a backdrop. The twist to what seemed at first to be only a family session was her brother’s plan to propose to his long time girlfriend at some point during the session. Soon after arriving at Donner, a beautiful spot near the west end of the lake, we started photographing the family session. Everyone was discreet and we all kept the big surprise under wraps until the time came to photograph the happy couple. Brandon’s big surprise was now ready to be revealed and the beautiful moment when he proposed to his soon to be wife happened. Women like secret proposal photography and this time was no different. It was such a joyful moment and for me, as a photographer, seeing their emotions made it very special. I got to record in images a momentous life event in a young couple’s lives.
